Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.” Philippians 4:4
Tidewater Baptist has the joy of ministering in the Beth Sholom Sands, a local retirement home. Jon James leads a weekly Bible Study at the Sands on Monday nights. He and his family have been ministering there since 2004. Several members from the church assist with the ministry at the Sands, which includes the weekly services, special holiday services, memorial services and visitation. The music and testimony leader, Kenneth Oldaker, has been ministering at the Monday Night services since 1995. The residents at the Sands are a great blessing to our church. Non-residents are welcome to attend the Bible study as well. Check with the church office for more details.
The Chesapeake Place
We thank the Lord for the wonderful privilege of being able to minister at The Chesapeake Place. In April 2010, Our Lord lead our church to start a Bible study at a local assisted living home called CareBridge. In April 2011 that home closed for renovations. With sadness in our hearts and after seeking our Fathers will on where else to go, we were lead to The Chesapeake Place on Volvo Parkway in Chesapeake. Two of our residents were there and the Lord used them to open the door for us. The Bible study started May 2011. It has been such a blessing to be able to go there. We have lots of singing and testimonies as well as a Bible lesson. It is our prayer that through the Gospel that we sing as well as teach that the residents will “believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye (they) might have life through his name.” John 20:31
We count it a joy and an honor to bring on the busses children from the surrounding areas to our church. We appreciate the parents that trust us every week and we are very glad to give your children rides and take care of them while they are on the busses and in church. Sunday School, Kids for Truth, Children’s Church, and special activities are just a few programs developed to reach them with the message of the gospel, to teach them about Jesus Christ and to give them opportunity to hear and memorize the Word of God.
We enjoy this ministry and as we are getting to know and love the children, we are very thankful to God for His love in entrusting them into our hands for a few hours a week. We pray that the results will be eternal redemption of their souls for all the children entrusted to our care.

So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17
Our Children’s ministry begins in the nursery. We offer nursery for ages 0-3 in both an infant and toddler room. We are pleased to be able to encourage your children with age appropriate activities, songs, and sometimes crafts in their classrooms.
TBT has many opportunities for children to learn from God’s Word. Sunday morning the kids are taught the Bible during Sunday School (beginning with our toddlers) and Children’s Church (3-6th grade). Both of these classroom times are filled with Bible lessons, crafts, activities, object lessons, stories, games, and songs. This is a morning full of God’s Word being taught to all ages.
Our Wednesday night program is another opportunity to teach children. The Kids 4 Truth clubs curriculum and program is a ministry that includes a lesson time, a Truth Book time (memory and recitation), a song time, and a reward time in order to fortify young hearts and minds with the essential teachings of the authentic Christian faith. Our hope is that kids will understand “why” they believe what they believe.
We are excited about our bus ministry [link to bus ministry] that brings in students from several different areas to our Sunday morning services (Sunday School and Junior Church) and our Wednesday Evening Services (for Kids 4 Truth). If you are interested in your children or family attending our church and are in need of transportation, please call the church at 757-545-7282.
Since teaching the Bible in the Public School system, our teachers have been repeatedly asked “Can you really teach the Bible in a Public School?” The answer is Yes! The Supreme Court ruled in 2001 in Good News Club v. Milford Central School that Good News Clubs can meet in public schools after school hours on the same terms as other community groups.
After-school Good News Clubs are an asset to schools and do not add any cost or liability to the school district. Children who wish to participate stay after school one hour per week and must have a parental permission slip. An exciting Bible lesson using captivating materials from CEF (Child Evangelism Fellowship) is presented each week.
This engaging time also includes songs, Scripture memorization, a missionary story, and review games or other activities reaffirming the week’s theme. The teachers are volunteers who are trained prior to working in the Clubs, and are screened according to the child protection policy. At the end of the Club time parents and guardians arrange for transportation home.
NURTURE Homeschool Group
At Tidewater Baptist Temple we are blessed to have many little ones of all ages. Although we have children in all forms of education here at Tidewater Baptist (including several Christian schools), there is a large group of families who have decided to homeschool their children. Our homeschool group takes its name from the verse in Ephesians that reads, “And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” Our group’s desire is for these young ones to grow up to have living, loving relationships with Jesus Christ.
Each year runs a little different depending on the needs of the group. For the 2011-12 School Year the following opportunities are available: a high-school co-op, Botany for 3-8th graders, Art I and Art II for grades 1st -12th, Weekly activities for preschool-3rd grade, and piano lessons (limited openings are available). We also will strive to have monthly field trips and opportunities for service. We are not confined to our own church members only but members of Tidewater Baptist do have first priority. Other like-minded homeschool families can participate on a case by case basis, based on availability and class size.
This year we will also be having a Keeper’s at Home Club for young ladies in grades 1st -9th to give them an opportunity to learn more about the vital role of being a keeper at home someday. We also have a young men’s club Contender’s of the Faith that helps teach our young men more about preparing practically to become a young man. Any questions in regards to our homeschool group, our Keepers at Home Club or homeschooling should be directed to attn: Cathy at church@tidewaterbaptist.org .
We are very blessed to be able to minister several times during the month in the Hampton Roads Regional Jail. We work directly with Chaplain Gene Sayre and the Good News Jail and Prison Ministry at the jail. The jail capacity is 1,310 inmates and we have an opportunity to minister to up to approximately 4,900 different inmates yearly.
We are able to meet the first, fourth and fifth Sundays from 2-4 p.m. We minister to both men and women: men to men and women to women. On the ladies’ side there have been opportunities to reach many different language groups with the gospel. John Stamatelatos has been graciously heading up this ministry since our church began ministering at HRRJ in 2009.
In order to participate in this ministry church members must be 18 years or older. There are more doors of availability than we are currently filling, so please see John if you are interested in this ministry.
“And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures which are able to make thee wise unto salvation though faith which is in Christ Jesus.” II Timothy 3:15
Tidewater Baptist is a place where young people can hear the word of God and come to saving faith in the God of the Word. Our youth minister is Jon James. He and his wife Kitty have been ministering to the TBT teens since 2001. Our church has a desire to follow the Great Commission of our Lord by providing our youth with a ministry of Christ-centered expository preaching and teaching of the Bible. The teens meet for Sunday School and Wednesday night classes, and also get together for monthly youth activities. Each summer, the teen group makes an annual trip to the Wilds Christian Camp in Brevard, North Carolina, which is one of the highlights of the entire year. Teens with a heart for missions work are invited to participate in the TBT Mission Teens ministry where they will be trained in child evangelism. The Mission Teens visit shelters, nursing homes, and churches in the U.S. and overseas, providing Gospel hymn music, testimonies and Vacation Bible School outreaches. They also serve in the junior church ministry at TBT. If you are looking for a place where your young people can grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, then prayerfully consider TBT!
